SUBJECTSModern Foreign Languages

Here at St Paul’s our children learn French as a foreign language from Year 3 to Year 6. We are eager to promote an interest in learning to speak a new language and the culture of the countries French is spoken in.

The children enjoy their learning through games and practical activities such as creating displays, learning familiar and new French songs, e.g. the French version of ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’; listening and reading both, familiar and new story texts, such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, making and eating French food and many more. Children at St Paul’s learn to understand that each language follow certain rules and structures, which will also enhance their knowledge about their own language.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGESYear 3

The children enjoy their learning through games and practical activities such as creating displays, learning familiar and new French songs, e.g. the French version of ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’; listening and reading both, familiar and new story texts, such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, making and eating French food and many more. Children at St Paul’s learn to understand that each language follow certain rules and structures, which will also enhance their knowledge about their own language.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGESYear 4

Year 4 children will already advance to more elaborate ways of conversing in French. They will begin to understand how to express an opinion and what an adjective agreement is. During their second year of learning a new language, the children will begin to go deeper into grammatical structures but the playful part of learning will still be at the forefront in acting out stories, role-play etc. Some topics that we cover in Year 4 that are of particular interest to children include ‘At School’, ‘My Home’ and ‘Sports’.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGESYear 5

In Year 5 our children are going to look at topics, such as ‘Eating Out’, which lends itself typically to great role play opportunities. However, to the end of the year, they will be looking at deeper topics, such as ‘The Environment’ and will learn how to express some opinions about the damage of smaller environmental areas such as a pond. Furthermore, whilst Year 5 children will also recap previously learned content, they will also look into more complicated sentence structure, e.g. how to form negative sentences, ask questions in different ways.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGESYear 6

At the end of year 6, our children will now be confident speakers and are hopefully well equipped for their transition into secondary school. During the autumn term, they will be looking at France as a country and researching some cities and sights. Towards the end of the year, one of the topics will be ‘The Future’ and the children will acquire a new tense to their grammatical repertoire: the future tense, which will be a great prerequisite for their Secondary MFL subject.
