Phonics Screening Check (Year 1)

In June, children in Year 1 will take part in the Phonics Screening Check.

This check helps confirm that children are developing phonics skills and can use them to read and decode words at the expected standard for their age.

The check:

• Is a short, simple assessment completed one-to-one with a teacher
• Includes reading a mix of real and made-up words
• Helps identify whether extra support may be needed

Most children take the check in Year 1, although some may complete it in Year 2 if appropriate.
