Prevent Duty

Our Commitment at St Paul’s C of E Primary School

At St Paul’s C of E Primary School, the safety, wellbeing and development of every child is at the heart of all that we do. As part of our safeguarding responsibilities, we are committed to protecting children from all forms of harm, including the risk of radicalisation and extremism.

Under Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, schools have a legal duty to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. This is known as the Prevent Duty.

The Prevent Duty forms part of the Government’s wider counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST, and works alongside other safeguarding responsibilities to ensure children are safe and supported.

Prevent aims to stop people from becoming involved in terrorism or supporting extremist views that may lead to harm. It focuses on early intervention and support for individuals who may be vulnerable to radicalisation.

The three key objectives of Prevent are to:

  • Tackle the causes of radicalisation and respond to extremist ideologies.

  • Safeguard and support those who may be vulnerable to radicalisation.

  • Support the rehabilitation and disengagement of those involved in extremist activity.

Radicalisation is viewed as a safeguarding concern, similar to other forms of abuse or exploitation, and should be addressed through appropriate support and intervention.

Prevent in Warwickshire

Warwickshire is a safe and welcoming county, but like all                                                      communities, it can be affected by national and international                                           events. Local agencies, schools, community groups and                                                              safeguarding partners work together to support the Government’s Prevent Strategy and help keep children and families safe.

How We Promote Prevent at St Paul’s

At St Paul’s C of E Primary School, we believe that creating a caring, inclusive and respectful environment is one of the most effective ways to protect children from extremist influences.

Through our Christian vision and values, we help pupils to develop:

  • Respect for themselves and others.

  • An understanding of different faiths, cultures and beliefs.

  • Critical thinking skills and the confidence to ask questions.

  • Positive relationships and a sense of belonging.

  • An appreciation of diversity within modern Britain.

We support the aims of Prevent through:

  • A broad and balanced curriculum, including Religious Education, Personal Development and Collective Worship.

  • Teaching children about democracy, respect, individual liberty and the rule of law through our promotion of British Values.

  • Encouraging pupils to express their views respectfully and listen to the views of others.

  • Challenging discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes.

  • Promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

  • Providing a safe environment where children feel valued, heard and supported.

PREVENT Online Safety

As part of our safeguarding arrangements, we take steps to protect children from accessing harmful or inappropriate content online. This includes:

  • Appropriate internet filtering and monitoring systems.

  • Teaching children how to stay safe online.

  • Helping pupils develop the skills needed to recognise misinformation, harmful content and online risks.

Staff Training and Safeguarding

All staff receive safeguarding training, including awareness of the Prevent Duty, and understand how to identify concerns that may indicate a child is vulnerable to radicalisation.

Any concerns are managed in line with our safeguarding procedures and may be discussed with external safeguarding partners where appropriate.
