Top Tips to Prepare your Child for Reception

St Paul’s Church of England Primary School welcomes you and your child. We look forward to getting to know you and working together to make your child’s time at St Paul’s a happy and successful one.

What can I do to help prepare my child for school?

  • Encourage your child to play with other children and share their belongings.

  • Ensure your child can put on their own coat independently and can cope with using the toilet independently.

  • Talk positively about starting school.

  • Help your child recognise their name and attempt to write it.

How can I help my child settle in?

  • Attend the induction sessions and talk about the school in a positive way.

  • Always say ‘goodbye and see you at home time’ when they start.  Your child will soon get into the routine but is important they know you are leaving but you will return!

  • If your child is upset when starting school, try not to let it upset you.  Tears are usually short lived.  We do understand how you both feel.

  • Talk to your child about school, but do not worry if they do not tell you much.

  • Children have access to the outside classroom in all weathers.  They will need to come to school wearing a named waterproof coat or jacket with a hood and they will need to leave a pair of named wellington boots at school in a named bag.

  • Black book bag (available to buy from the school office.

  • Please avoid any other bags, such as back packs, etc., as your child does not need them and they do not fit into their drawers.

  • If your child is likely to have a toilet accident, they can bring a spare change of clothes in a yellow draw string school bag (available from the office) which can be kept at school.
