We follow a locally agreed RE syllabus put together by the local authority (Warwickshire) but have replaced some Christianity Units with units from a resource called Understanding Christianity (UC). This resource is child friendly and encourages children to develop their own thinking and understanding of Christianity. Each unit of UC starts with a question for the children to explore and has 3 main elements which are, making sense of the text, understanding the impact and making connections. For example, Year 1 explore the question ‘What is the good news that Jesus brings?’. They investigate the lives of some people for whom Jesus was good news and explore how Jesus offered friendship, peace and forgiveness.
As well as teaching Christianity, RE involves teaching the children about the other main world religions which include Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism (Warwickshire Agreed Syllabus). Children learn ‘Core learning building blocks’ the first time they come across a new religion and then explore ‘Deeper Learning and Reflection’ the second time they visit that religion.
Throughout the year, each year group has an opportunity to visit a different place of worship. This helps the children understand the cultures and traditions of the religion and broaden their horizons by gaining an excellent interactive experience.
By the end of their time at St. Paul’s, children have learnt about and visited all the main world religions’ places of worship, as well having a good understanding and respect for these world religions.
