“The arrangements for safeguarding at St. Paul’s CofE Primary School are effective. There is a strong culture of safeguarding across the school. There are effective systems in place to record and pass on all concerns. Leaders follow up these concerns. Children are taught how to keep themselves safe assemblies and the curriculum.”

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility

Under the Education Act 2002, schools have a legal duty to make arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children. In addition, the Children Act 1989 requires all school staff to share any information that raises concerns about a child’s welfare.

This includes concerns related to neglect, as well as physical, emotional, sexual, or online abuse.

Where appropriate, school staff will discuss concerns with parents or carers and explain the need to make a referral to Families First. However, this conversation will only take place if it does not place the child at increased risk of significant harm.

If the school has reasonable cause to suspect that a child is suffering, or is likely to suffer, significant harm, advice will be sought from Family Connect.

It is important to understand that, in some cases, concerns shared with external agencies may later be found to be unfounded. Nevertheless, the Designated Safeguarding Lead will always act in accordance with the law and in the best interests of the child.

If you have any concerns about the safety or welfare of a child or young person, outside of school hours, please contact Family Connect on 01926 414144.

It is important to share concerns you have, no matter how small you think they may be. It is always better to say something than nothing.

We will treat all concerns shared with professionalism and confidentiality.
